SV650 Mod: GSX-R Front Turn Signal Swap

by Stacy on June 28, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I swapped the stock front turn signals on my SV650 with with ones off a 2005 GSX-R 750. With both the front and rear signals done, my turn signal swap project is now complete. (See SV650 Mod: GSX-R Rear Turn Signal Swap for info on swapping the rear signals.)

I’m going to recycle a picture of the GSX-R signals from my previous post, because they’re essentially the same:

The service manual was somewhat vague and I ended up disassembling a few too many parts unnecessarily. For reference, I removed the flyscreen and headlight bulb, and loosened the headlight bucket and brackets. You can probably get by with removing just the flyscreen and headlight bulb to expose the wiring hidden in the bucket. It’s a tight fit, but you should be able to loosen the screws holding the stock signals in place.

The wiring connectors for the stock front signals have different shaped plugs than those used in the rear. I chose to snip the connectors off the stock signals and solder them to the GSX-R signals. Once the connectors were attached, it was a simple matter to connect everything back up and secure the new signals to the brackets.

You can see my novice electrical work up close in this picture. Gotta love that liquid electrical tape!

The front signals look really nice!

This project is perfect for those who prefer function over useless bling. But thanks to the bling-bling folks, stock GSX-R turn signals are pretty easy to find! :)

Bolty, you keep posting all these cool mods! How many and what electrical accessories is your SV wired for?

@Mike Berry: A list of the accessories I’ve written about can be found here: my SV650 accessories

The short list is: heated grips, Gerbing’s dual temperature controller (for grips and heated jacket), Hyper-lites brake and running lights, GSX-R turn signals, SAE and cigarette lighter power connectors, a quick connector for a battery tender, and a voltage meter. Everything but the battery tender connector, Hyper-lite brake lights, and GSX-R turn signals is wired through an Eastern Beaver fuseblock.
