Corvallis (and the rest of the Pacific NW) is currently in the grip of one of those storms the Bering Sea likes to send down our way a few times every winter. It snowed two or three inches on Sunday night, which by commute time on Monday turned into a sheet of ice over an inch thick covering every road in town.
At work on Monday morning, a few of my co-workers asked me, “Did you ride the bike in today?” Does this mean they think I’m exceptionally skilled? Nah, I bet they just think I’m crazy!
For the record, I drove, but only because the buses were running way out of schedule.
Did you know that not only can you stud your own tires, you can buy “snow claws” that mount on tires a lot like chains would?

Ms. Stacy: No but I did ride Saturday! It was a wonderful 50f all day and most of the night. Then less then 24 hours later it was all of 2f and over 3 inches of snow with more on the way today. UGH!
That question always gets me. Are people trying to be funny or just dumb? During riding season it is all I hear from people to which I respond with a “You get one stupid question a day and that was it?” That same answer works in the winter too when there is and inch of ice on the roads.
I don’t think, wait I know, people have to idea what it is to ride. There for they have no idea how bad it feels when we can’t ride.

Stacy:
we all have our comfort levels, just as Dan wrote today. I don’t like to take chances either and I have my own rules which I abide by, and when there is any chance of ice being on the roads, then I just take the car. Better to be smart and play it safe. This is very unusual weather for our part of the country and I hope it returns to normal soon so we can ride again.
