Long Weekend

by Stacy on February 24, 2009

I audited my second Team Oregon BRT this weekend, which is why I’ve been rather quiet the past few days. Auditing the BRT means two days of four or five hours standing out in the range followed by two hours of classroom work. Unfortunately, the combination of standing around and watching students ride around in circles while the weather took turns being ice cold, sunny, rainy, and windy was enough to wring me out to dry. I guess forty hours of cubicle dwelling a week has made me soft.

Part of the fatigue was definitely mental. It’s one thing to actually conduct the course and actively participate. It’s another thing to remain engaged when all you’re doing is standing around and observing something you’ve already seen twice before. However, the experience definitely made me understand why so much emphasis is placed on keeping the students engaged during the course.

Anyway, it’s probably time to get started on that couch to 5k plan.

Our first hard rain in months started on Sunday. Good for the watershed and ski resorts, bad for enjoyable riding. I’m happy to report that the new jacket remains waterproof and that the Squee works most excellently. To top things off, I asked Don Weber to re-cover my passenger seat so now everything matches nicely.

Didn’t know you were auditing- cool! Are you signed up for the IPC in March? Which range were you at, and who were the instructors?

Nothing was as exhausting as the audit days. I think it’s because they are boring; I enjoyed it much more after I was allowed to step on the range and help out.

It’s looking like the May IPC will be more realistic in terms of timing, as I still have things to do before I can even sign up for it.

This weekend’s audit was at LBCC with Ben Masengil as the classroom instructor and Sam Lovelace(?) — sorry Sam, I can’t remember your last name — as the second range instructor.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who was drained by an audit. It also appears that I picked up a cold on Saturday, too, but this post was already dangerously close to my “Too Whiny” threshold.

Congratulations on getting the audit done! One of the reasons for auditing is to give a person a taste ahead of time of what it’s like to be out there in the weather all weekend. You’re tough; the whining is just a cover to make you appear to be actually human. :) It just gets worse, you know. I love Ben. He can stand in Albany and coach in Salem with that voice. His heart is pure gold. You got Sam’s last name correct. He’s one of my newbies. I’m teaching with him this weekend in Salem.

If you haven’t done so already, call Ray Pierce. 541-737-9126. Mention my name and he’ll forgive you anyway. There’s still room in the May IP. Technically, it’s IP-R ( Instructor Prep Range ). That’s the one Mary Kaye and I are teaching together. See, I told you it would get worse!

IP-C is a one day prep for classroom. Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about that until you have the range done and feel ready.

So, Tedder, what’s your story? Are you going to be a Portland instructor?
