Swap Meet Finds and a Nice Sunday Ride

by Stacy on May 4, 2009

Scores of folks braved the soggy weather at the 5th Annual BMWRO/Motogear Swap Meet on Saturday. While I didn’t sell any of the items I was hoping to, I scored a couple of terrific deals:

  • A Garmin gpsmap 76S and Touratech mount for $25.
  • A damn near brand-new set of Tour Master soft saddlebags for $50. They even have blue accents to match my SV!
  • An offer to trade a set of blue-accented Powermadd handguard plastics for my black ones.

I’m quite excited about my new (to me) GPS! I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while now, but didn’t want to pay the exorbitant buy-in cost. GPS unit, mount kit, mapping software, cables… it adds up!

There was some discussion whether this particular unit was water and vibration resistant. It turns out that the 76S is a marine grade handheld that is waterproof and even floats! I know you snarky commenters are just rarin’ to ask me to test that feature out! Anyway, if this GPS held up through the previous owner’s rides through Baja and Copper Canyon, it’ll probably hold up for me.

On Sunday, I rode three quarters of the route for next weekend’s Mid-Valley Newbie Ride. Aside from some debris on the road left over from Saturday’s freak windstorm, the roads are good and the route should be a lot of fun.

I took the GPS along for a test spin. Here are the stats from the trip computer after this ride:

Trip Odom 83.79 mi
Moving Average 46.9 mph
Overall Average 40.8 mph
Stopped Time 00:16:08
Moving Time 01:47:08
Total Time 02:03:16

That is a fantastic find on the GPS, not to mention the saddlebags! I'm with you, I want a GPS, but can't convince myself to fork over the money for one, maybe I'll find a great deal some day like you did!

I'll have to keep my eyes open for a swap meet like this in Ohio, I'm sure they exist, but I can't recall seeing info for one anywhere.
