Have you ever been so enamored with a particular product that you’d go to great lengths to procure it? Even if it meant traveling miles away, or today’s equivalent, ordering it in bulk over the internet, outrageous shipping be damned?
My current love affair is with DuPont Teflon Multi-use Lubricant. If you’re a regular reader of WebBikeWorld, chances are you’ve already heard about this stuff:
Here are some of the many possible uses I’ve come across:
- Lubricate my motorcycle chain. It’s o-ring safe. It’s not messy. It resists water.
- Lubricate the keyhole on the ignition switch. At work, my bike is parked out in the rain all day, day after day. I survived this winter partly because this stuff works so well to prevent “sticky key” syndrome.
- Lubricate the sidestand pivot.
- Lubricate the pivots and joints on car doors.
- Lubricate door hinges inside the house. Midnight refrigerator raids require stealth.
- Lubricate darn near everything.
This stuff has three things going for it: it lubricates well, it dries clean (into a dry, and not wet or sticky, film) and it lasts.
I’m sad to say that there’s no source for this magical product in Corvallis. If you’d like to obtain a sample for your own studies, I’ve found the most reliable source to be Lowe’s. You can also order it by the case over the internet (tempting!) At present, I’ve settled for simply stopping by every Lowe’s I come across in my travels and buying a can or two. At $5 per can, I can afford to stock up.

I wonder if this would work on my squeeky knee and ankle. Wd40 seems to only work for a couple days.
-Peace
It really is magical stuff since, once it dries, it doesn't pick up any grime and water run right off. I've been using it on my bicycle chain and derailleurs since 1980. Back then, the only place I was ever able to find it was in really small tubes in high end bicycle shops. I'll look for it at Lowes now. Thanks!
I think I commented on the wrong post…
(Comment added by Stacy: I fixed it. I think.)
I just started using the industrial grade more or less same product Dupont Teflon Chain-Saver last week and discovered an additional advantage to this product. It gives off a pleasant coconut like smell which I can sometimes smell even while riding.
@Murray: Heh, that is an advantage. Maxima Chain Wax also has a pleasant odor, IMHO.
I note that you mentioned you lubricated your sidestand pivot with this product. I wonder if you also used it for control levers, brake pedal pivot and footrest pivots. I have been using motor oil for those and of course that attracts dirt, etc. I use grease for the sidestand and that gets pretty dirty fairly soon. Maybe I’ll try the Dupont for the lube points after next cleaning. So far, on the chain it’s working pretty good.
gostaria de saber se a dupont tem teflon de revestimento, pois eu tenho uma chapa bifeteira e gostaria de revestila
Sinto muito, eu não falo português.
