Reallllly blew it today. Started up my '01 SV650S and let it idle with choke slightly on---and then had to take off and forgot all about it. I usually don't warm up the bike unless I plan to ride it...I was gone over an hour. It was still running when I got back and naturally it was hot. When I turned it off, fan ran for a short time, then switched off. Outside air temp was about 32 degrees.
Aside from having my head examined[actually that's not even necessary after a stunt like this] what damage may I have done? Bike starts and runs ok now that it's cooled off, but I didn't let it run very long. This time. Thanks in advance.

I think the guy who made the mistake is taking this very well, and I think the purpose of the post is useful as a warning. I have actually thought about ways I can be safer around my chain as recently.

I have been known to run the bike in gear while on the stand for lubing the chain, but not cleaning.

When cleaning I use a grunge brush, but also use a rag while turning the wheel by hand. I am probably going to be turning it bit more slowly from here on.

In related news, I learned from my local Subaru dealership that the maintenance plans do not necessarily follow the manual! My Subie is at 30K miles and I expected the differential fluid, transmission fluid to be replaced. Instead, it was just inspected! I'm sure this is par for any dealership, but if I get a new car in the future, I will probably skip the service plan. Everything they did, I can do myself, but originally I didn't have a garage so it was helpful.

@John G: I see I'm not the only one with grand plans in mind! Consider the chart a "to-do list" of sorts.

Yup, funny how a certain kind of thread keeps ending up on gixxer.com! I was thinking of updating the chain cleaning article, but I've already seen posts on other moto forms like, "That guy was stupid. I'm not stupid, so I'll keep cleaning my chain with the bike in gear 'cuz it won't happen to me."

Oh yea, and I don't know if I even need to mention a certain post on the gixxer.com forums of the chain cleaning gone wrong? Maybe a mention needs to be made in your chain cleaning article about avoiding loss of fingers!

I think of my chain clean interval in terms of fill-ups. Since each tank gets me about 140-150miles, I clean and lube the chain every 4 fill-ups.

I am pretty sure bolty.net is not in the owners manual, but everything else looks just like what I am [now] familiar with.

I totally expect to see this whole thing hyperlinked out to separate entries in the coming months :)
