Thanks to the Head Cold From Hell, aka Explody-Painful-Sinus-Face, aka Phlegm Plague 2010, I’ve been kept away from my SV for over a week. Damn. It.
This makes the third (non-continuous) week in as many months that I’ve been off the bike for a week straight. Now I’m behind in my riding goals. Damn! It!
The good news is that I’m starting to feel better, though not quite ready to hop back on two wheels as I’m not a fan of Riding While Sick. I’m hanging in there thanks to all your well wishes.
I also ordered a set of Galfer stainless steel brake lines as the front brake on the SV has started to feel a bit meh. I’m coming up on 2 years of owning the SV so it’s nearly time to flush the brake fluid, and if I’m going to go to that trouble, I might as well do the whole upgrade at once.1 Did someone say “how to guide”? I thought so.
Finally, this picture has been floating around the Intarwebs today thanks to coverage on a few maker/DIY/how-to blogs that really ought to know better…
This is exactly what I want to see behind more steering wheels.
Discuss!
1 Astute readers might question this purchase in light of my recent stated goals… but I don’t consider having good working brakes to be an unnecessary farkle!

I hope you are watching Dakar as penance for not riding and being sick.
I’m glad you’re feeling better!
I change my brake fluid every spring. It’s really easy on the SV, and only about $8 for brake fluid. It took me an hour the first time for the front, but now I can do it in about 15 minutes.
Stacy, I’m sorry to hear you’re still sick! And glad you’re coming through it. Blech!!
We’re stopped on the riding end of things her due to this huge frickin’ rainstorm. I saw the sun for about 30 seconds this morning, got hopeful, and then had said hopes dashed, as the rain started pouring on down again…
Get well! I’m sending out good thoughts your way.
@tedder: Yes, and I’ve already said my 150 “Hail Jonahs” for the day.
@Chris Luhman: I’ve been going off the maintenance chart in the manual, which says every two years. I’m sure a flush would be just as easy as it was on the ol’ Honda Rebel, but I have my heart set on a brake line upgrade.
@Liz Petersen: Oh, so that’s where our rain went yesterday!
A how-to would be perfect. I was hoping you’d say that. I’ve only replaced my damaged brake fluid reservoir, but not done a flush yet. I wonder if you really need the stainless steel lines or if there is air in the lines you are feeling? Either way, you should definitely upgrade them… I want to get braided stainless lines on all my vehicles eventually.
Glad you’re feeling better. Maybe it’s time to take scenic rides to and from work just to try and make up for the lost week.
I change out the brake fluid yearly and it never looks good. I’m not sure why it seems to deteriorate so fast. Moisture seems to get into the system.
Maybe the iPhone mount is for when you are running a GPS app..
i hope you get better soon i know how it is except i don’t have a choice but to ride my bike when im sick kinda takes the fun out of it
