The ADV Ride Report De-crufter (for Firefox)
The ADV Ride Report De-crufter is a Greasemonkey script for Firefox that gives you the option to filter out everything other than the original author’s posts. Select which threads you want filtered, and the script will remember your selections as long as it’s installed.
What Does It Do?
View the first page of a ride report (or any thread on ADVRider, really). The script adds a snazzy little checkbox below the “New Reply” button, like so:
Check the box, and voila! I like to call this trick “cruft-be-gone”.
How Do I Get It?
- The first requirement is Firefox.
- The second requirement is the Greasemonkey extension. To install it, click on the link, then click on the “Add to Firefox” button. A dialog box will appear. Read it, then click on “Install Now”. Restart Firefox when prompted.
Once you have Greasemonkey, you can install the script by clicking on this link:
Install the ADV Ride Report De-crufter NOW!
A dialog box similar to the following will appear:
Read it, then click on “Install”. That’s it.
Anything Else?
Imagine you’re on page 200 of the best ride report you’ve ever read. The author posted an incredible picture and you want to know what everyone had to say about it. Can you temporarily disable the filtering on the page? Yes, by clicking the “only show” checkbox up top.
Here’s how the checkbox works:
- click it on page 1: your selection is saved for the thread, and will be carried over to subsequent pages
- click it on page 2 to n: temporarily disable the filter on this page only
Make sense?
Uninstalling The Script
Not that you’d ever want to because it’s just that awesome…
- Go to Tools -> Greasemonkey -> Manage User Scripts…
- Select “ADV Ride Report De-crufter” from the list on the left, then click the Uninstall button.
Upgrading the Script
To upgrade this script when a new version is released:
- Go to Tools -> Greasemonkey -> Manage User Scripts…
- Select “ADV Ride Report De-crufter” from the list on the left, then click the Uninstall button.
- Then, click here to install the new version: Install the ADV Ride Report De-crufter NOW!

As per the instructions, you need to install the Greasemonkey add-on first: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/74…
This is too cool! I have many links to ADV reports on my blog, I’m going to add a pointer this tool!
Thanks for the link, and I’m glad you find the script useful!

Wow…that is just awesome….thanks Stacy!!
Has this fantastic script stopped working with FF5 ?
I have just upgraded and now the tick box is there, but does nothing.
The picture Once-inator still works though
It appears that upgrading to Firefox 5 breaks this script. At this time, I do not know if the issue is with the script or with Greasemonkey.
I will investigate, but with my OBDR trip coming up in two short weeks, I don’t have a timeframe for when this will be fixed. (My advice: don’t be surprised if stuff breaks when you upgrade to the bleeding edge.)
Works fine for me in Firefox 5. This is my first time installing it though, so if you had it before upgrading and now it doesn’t work, it might be worth trying to uninstall and reinstall.
Yes, that’s because I just released a new version of this script (version 1.4) that fixes the issue with Firefox 5.
