The ADV Ride Report De-crufter (for Internet Explorer)

Post image for The ADV Ride Report De-crufter (for Internet Explorer)

The ADV Ride Report De-crufter is an IE7Pro script for Internet Explorer that gives you the option to filter out everything other than the original author’s posts. Select which threads you want filtered, and the script will remember your selections as long as it’s installed.

What Does It Do?

View the first page of a ride report (or any thread on ADVRider, really). The script adds a snazzy little checkbox below the “New Reply” button, like so:

The ADV Ride Report De-crufter

Check the box, and voila! I like to call this trick “cruft-be-gone”.

How Do I Get It?

The first requirement is Internet Explorer. If you use Firefox or Safari, don’t worry, alternative editions of this script are available here.

The second requirement is the IE7Pro add-on. To install it, click on the link, then click on the big “Download Free” button. Save the installer to your computer; the filename will be something like “IE7proSetup_2.4.5.exe”. Double-click on the file and follow the instructions to install IE7Pro.

Once you have IE7Pro, you can install my script by right-clicking on this link and selecting “Save Target As…”:

Install the ADV Ride Report De-crufter NOW!

Save the file to your computer. It’s easiest if you save directly to the IE7Pro folder: C:\Program Files\IEPro\userscripts

Now, start up IE. You should see two new options under the Tools menu:

ie7pro tools menu

Select “IE7Pro Preferences”. The following dialog box will appear:

ie7pro userscripts dialog

Select “User Scripts” from the list on the left. Make sure the checkboxes next to “Enable User Scripts” and “ADV Ride Report De-crufter” are checked.

IE7Pro adds a ton of features and power tools to IE. If you don’t want any of these features, select “Modules” from the list and uncheck everything except “Scripts & Plugins”, like so:

ie7pro prefs

Click OK, and you’re done.

Anything Else?

Imagine you’re on page 200 of the best ride report you’ve ever read. The author posted an incredible picture and you want to know what everyone had to say about it. Can you temporarily disable the filtering on the page? Yes, by clicking the “only show” checkbox up top.

Here’s how the checkbox works:

  • click it on page 1: your selection is saved for the thread, and will be carried over to subsequent pages
  • click it on page 2 to n: temporarily disable the filter on this page only

Make sense?

Uninstalling The Script

Not that you’d ever want to because it’s just that awesome, but if you really have to uninstall, go to Tools -> IE7Pro Preferences.

Select “User Scripts” from the list on the left, then click on “ADV Ride Report De-crufter”. Click the Uninstall button to remove the script.

@ross: Open up Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Program Files\IEPro\userscripts folder. Make sure you see the adv_ride_report_de-cruft.ieuser.js file in there.

You may need to restart IE after putting the script file in the C:\Program Files\IEPro\userscripts folder.
